Why phone photos usually come out sideways
A phone camera does not rotate the picture it takes. It saves the sensor's pixels and adds a note saying which way up the phone was. Photo apps read that note, which is why the image looks right everywhere you normally see it — and why a converter that ignores it produces a PDF where every portrait shot lies on its side.
That note is applied here before the page is built, so what you see is what you get. Transparent PNGs are handled for the same reason: PDF has no transparency, so anything see-through is placed on a solid background rather than turning black.
Fit to image, or a real page size?
Fit to image makes each page exactly the size of its picture, so there are no white borders. Best for screenshots, artwork, and anything that will be read on a screen.
A4, Letter or Legal puts every image on a consistent printable page with a margin you choose, and orients each page to its image so a landscape photo is not shrunk to fit a portrait sheet. Best for anything going to a printer, or into a document alongside other pages.
